Healthy New Year's Resolutions For 2016
1. Stop Smoking
It's common knowledge at this point that smoking causes severe health issues, yet thousands of people all across the world battle with this addiction every single day. 2016 can be your year to break free from this challenge. Talk with a close friend, a family member, or a professional to devise a strategy for overcoming your smoking addiction this year.
2. Start Exercising
Consistent physical exercise has shown time and time again to offer tons of different health benefits, such as improved quality of sleep, lower stress levels, and better overall physical health. Rather than making a vague promise to "exercise more" in 2016, however, set specific goals that are easy to attain. Do 30 jumping jacks every night before bed, for example, or a 60-second plank every morning.
3. Embrace An Active Lifestyle
You don't have to exercise regularly to embrace a more active lifestyle. There are plenty of things you can do to incorporate more activity into your daily life. For example, park in the very back parking lot when going to the mall or grocery store, so you have to walk farther to get to the store. Taking the stairs instead of riding the elevator can also be a great way to increase your daily activity level.
4. Limit Sugar Intake
Many of us don't think of it as such, but sugar is actually a drug - and a very addictive one, at that. Unfortunately, sugar is incredibly pervasive in today's world. It can even be found in places we would never think to look for it, such as canned beans. This means that cutting out sugar entirely is almost impossible, but you can take steps to limit your sugar intake by cutting out soda or desserts.
5. Stand Instead Of Sitting
Americans, as a whole, are adopting an increasingly sedentary lifestyle. We sit at our desks, in the car, in class, at home, at restaurants, and everywhere else. However, a sedentary lifestyle can result in a wide variety of negative health effects, such as increasing our risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and even some times of cancer. Decrease your risk by making it a point to stand whenever possible.
6. Drink More Water
How much water do you drink on a daily basis? We're willing to bet that it's not enough. Most health experts recommend drinking around 64 ounces of water per day (eight 8-ounce glasses). Getting plenty of water is critical for several of our body's everyday functions, such as flushing toxins and promoting the flow of oxygen. Keep in mind that soda and alcoholic beverages, while they may contain some amounts of water, do not count as a glass of water.
7. Start Small
The biggest mistake most people make is setting lofty goals for their New Year's Resolutions that they can't possibly maintain. If you haven't exercised much in the past year, expecting to run a mile every day is probably unrealistic. Rather, set small, attainable goals. Meeting your goals can boost your confidence level, which will in turn motivate you to continue sticking with it.
