Resolve To Be Healthier In 2017

Forget money, houses, and boats - your health is the most valuable asset you can have. Health is what allows you to pursue a career, raise a family, and chase any number of different dreams. Unfortunately, many people dedicate less time to their health than any other aspect of their lives.

As we move forward into the New Year, it's time to take a close look at some of our lifestyle patterns to identify where we have room for improvement. Since your health is so important, take this opportunity to develop some new habits to promote a healthy lifestyle in 2017. The Lime in the Coconut Compounding Pharmacy is here to help.

New Year's Resolutions To Be Healthier In 2017:

Don't Eat Sugary Foods More Than Twice A Week
Sugar is everywhere. Some sources are obvious (like desserts or donuts), but others are much harder to identify (like canned beans and ketchup). Its pervasiveness makes it next to impossible to eliminate entirely, but you can make progress by only eating obviously sugary foods (cookies, pies, cakes, etc) two days per week - or less!

Take A Walk Every Day
Walking is a great way to exercise and improve your health. Long walks are great, but short walks are beneficial too. Choose a small route near your home (such as your block or your street) to walk every single day, no matter what the weather. It may be hard to get motivated at first, but it will get easier once it becomes routine.

Do One Plank Every Morning
Planks are a great form of exercise because they work your core and your entire body. You don't have to do them for a long time to reap the benefits; holding them for just 30 or 60 seconds will make a big difference. Doing one every morning as soon as you wake up is a great way to set the tone for an active, productive day.

Take The Stairs
When was the last time you chose to take the stairs instead of the elevator? Elevators are easy and convenient, and we tend to jump onto them without giving it a second thought. However, riding elevators (and escalators, too) is contributing to our sedentary lifestyle and rising obesity levels. Combat this trend by resolving to take the stairs any time you can.

Drink Water
What did you have to drink today? Coffee when you first woke up, orange juice with breakfast, tea or soda with lunch... with so many enticing beverages at their disposal, many people in America drink a surprisingly little amount of water. However, these other beverages often have a lot of sugar that can make it hard to lose weight and stay healthy. By drinking water (or caffeine-free herbal tea) throughout the day instead, you can eliminate extra calories, stay hydrated, and be healthier.

Take A Probiotic Regularly
Many of us think of bacteria as a bad thing, but that's not entirely accurate. While there are certainly bad forms of bacteria, there are also a great many good forms. In fact, an estimated 400-500 of these good forms reside in your GI tract and are directly correlated to your overall health. Many people take antibiotics and use antibacterial hand soap without giving it a second thought, but what they may not realize is that these antibacterial products can reduce the number of good bacteria in their systems as well. By taking a probiotic, you can help rebuild your strains of healthy bacteria.

DIY Healthy Alternatives To Everyday Products: 4 Recipes With Essential Oils

Household cleaning products, bug spray, air fresheners, shampoo... We use these products so frequently that we often take them for granted. Most people rarely give it a second thought before wiping their kids' toys down with Clorox, washing their hair, or coating themselves in bug spray. People are often surprised and a little dismayed to learn about the extra (often toxic) ingredients mixed into these products, but they are so essential to everyday life that they continue to use them anyway. The Lime in the Coconut Compounding Pharmacy is here to help you break out of this cycle - keep reading to learn more about essential oils and how you can use them to make safe, healthy alternatives for these everyday products.

Bug Spray
Recipe from WellnessMama.com

Instructions:
  1.  Fill a spray bottle halfway with distilled water
  2. Use witch hazel to finish filling the water bottle (almost to the top)
  3. Add 1/2 teaspoon of vegetable glycerin (optional)
  4. Add 30-50 drops of essential oil for desired scent
Shake well. Recommended oils to choose from include lemongrass, cajeput, cedar, eucalyptus, catnip, citronella, rosemary, clove, mint, tea tree, and/or lavender. These oils have a pleasant smell that serves as a natural insect repellent.

Shampoo
Recipe from NewLeafWellness.com

Whisk together the following ingredients:
  • 1/3 cup of Dr. Bronner's Pure Castile Soap
  • 1/4 cup of coconut milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon of vitamin E oil
  • 20 drops of essential oils of your choice
If you have dry hair, you may want to add 1/2 teaspoon of almond oil or olive oil. Choose the essential oil(s) you want to use based on their aroma. Store in a plastic or glass container.

Everyday Cleaner
Recipe from EverdayRoots.com

In a spray bottle, mix together the following ingredients:
  • 1/4 - 1/2 cup of distilled white vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons of baking soda
  • Several drops of tea tree or eucalyptus essential oil
Once you have mixed these ingredients, fill the spray bottle the rest of the way with water. Shake it well and let it settle before using it for the first time. If you are using it on fabrics, test it in a small, discreet location first to ensure that it won't alter the color. Tea tree and eucalyptus are good oils to use for cleaning products because, in addition their pleasant smell, they have natural anti-microbial properties.

Air Freshener

Make your base for your air freshener by mixing the following ingredients together in a spray bottle:
  • 2 tablespoons of vodka, rubbing alcohol, or pure vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup of water
  • 15-25 drops of essential oils of your choice
If you are using this blend purely as an air freshener, you don't have to worry about finding the oils that contain anti-microbial properties. Choose the scents you like the best. The author of this recipe recommends using a wide variety of oils, including peppermint, lavender, grapefruit, lemon, orange, clove, geranium, rosemary. Feel free to experiment with these or any of your favorite Young Living blends.

Not Just A Cosmetic Problem

Being overweight or obese isn't a simply cosmetic problem. These conditions greatly increase your risk for other health problems.

Abnormal Blood Fat Levels

If you're overweight or obese, you're at increased risk of having abnormal levels of blood fats. These include high levels of triglycerides and LDL ("bad") cholesterol, and low levels of HDL ("good") cholesterol. Abnormal levels of these blood fats are a risk factor for coronary heart disease, which can lead to heart attack and heart failure. Abnormal blood fats can be corrected with weight reduction.

Staying Healthy During The Holidays

We've said it before and we'll say it again: your health is your most valuable asset. No matter how you plan on celebrating the holiday season, we encourage you to make a conscious effort to keep your immune system strong and your health intact. Our compounding pharmacy at the Lake of the Ozarks is here to help you stay healthy this holiday season with these quick, common-sense reminders.

1. Watch Your Nutrition
Cookies, candy, hot chocolate, Christmas cocktails... sweet treats and alcohol are far too accessible during the holidays. Indulging in a special beverage or a decadent dessert isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it's important to do so in moderation. Your body has to work hard to process toxins like sugar and alcohol, so consuming large quantities of these substances can weaken your body's natural defenses and make you more likely to get sick.

2. Don't Underestimate The Importance Of Mental Health
Your mental state plays a huge role in your overall physical health. If you are extremely stressed, for example, you may be more likely to catch a cold or nasty virus that could lead to a headache, fever, or stomach bug. Avoid overloading yourself with too many commitments this holiday season. Don't be afraid to say "no" when necessary!

3. Stay Active
Physical exercise boosts your immune system and contributes to greatly improved overall health. The cold temperatures and hectic schedules sometimes make it all too tempting to let exercise slide to the back burner (or off the stove entirely) during the holidays, but it's often far easier to make time for a little bit of exercise every day than being sick for several days in a row.

4. Make It From Scratch
When cooking or baking this holiday season, taking the time to make your items from scratch provies a great opportunity to make them more healthy. Instead of blindly filling your body with the refined sugars in the cake mix, for example, you can make your own and substitute healthier sweeteners (like agave nectar). It doesn't have to be a huge concession on your part to make a big difference - a little bit goes a long way!

5. Avoid Unnecessary Contact With Germs
As the old saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. One of the best ways to keep yourself from getting sick is to simply avoid contact with germs and illness-causing bacteria. Wash your hands with soap and warm water frequently, and avoid sharing foods or beverages with other people. There's a reason these suggestions are so pervasive in our society - they go a long way towards reducing unnecessary exposure to unhealthy viruses and bacteria.

6. Increase Your Body's Natural Defenses
Your body is equipped with germ-fighting cells and bacteria that are designed to keep you healthy. In addition to eating a healthy, balanced diet, you can increase this natural defense system by taking immune-boosting supplements. We offer a variety of these supplements, including elderberry juice and probiotics.

Happy Holidays From The Lime!
On behalf of everyone at our Lake of the Ozarks pharmacy, we hope you and your family enjoy a safe and healthy holiday season. If there is any way we can be of service to you, please don't hesitate to let us know! We look forward to talking with you.
