Always Consult a Veterinarian Before Using Treatment
Dogs typically will eat grass when their stomachs are upset. This is the natural way to cleanse out your dog's stomach. However, this could be a good indicator that you might want to take them to visit your local vet. You may read about home remedies or over the counter medications, but ALWAYS consult your vet before proceeding with treatment.
Figure Out What Your Dog Ate
When you know your dog has an upset stomach, it's best to do a little investigating and figure out what they ate prior to the stomach ache. This information could assist your vet in finding the diagnosis.
Keep Your Dog Hydrated
It is very important to keep your dog hydrated at all times, especially if they are experiencing diarrhea. If your dog is experiencing diarrhea, he or she could become dehydrated quickly. Although, don't assume that you can keep your dog hydrated on water alone. He or she will also need vitamins and electrolytes to retain fluids. Consult your vet as soon as possible fore treatment.
Check Your Dog's Temperature
You may want to take your dog's temperature as well. Rectal thermometers are most accurate, but ear thermometers can be used as well. Your dog's normal body temperature should be about 101.5 degrees Fahrenheit. If the temperature is higher than 102 degrees or lower than 99 degrees you should take your dog to see a vet immediately. 102 degrees or higher could indicate a fever.
Consider Compounded Medication
Just like humans, no 2 animals are alike. Our compounding pharmacy at the Lake of the Ozarks offers customized dosages to meet your dog's specific needs. In certain situations, your veterinarian may prescribe a particular medication that is on backorder and not locally available. In these situations our talented pharmacy technicians can mix active ingredients together to create a prescription for an otherwise unavailable (or discontinued) product.
