4 Supplements To Start Taking Today

Your body is a complex and carefully designed organism. In order to maintain optimum health, literally billions of cells, nerves, microorganisms, muscles, bones, ligaments, and more must work together in perfect harmony. Though your body is designed to succeed, it needs a little help now and then to continue performing at maximum health and efficiency. As the proud (and only) resident of your body, it is up to you to help it out whenever you can. The Lime in the Coconut is here to assist you along the way!

Dietary Supplements - Why Are They Necessary?

Supplements do exactly as their names suggest - they supplement your body's nutrition to help it achieve optimum health. They are designed to add nutritional value to complement the food and drink you consume on a daily basis. Generally, dietary supplements consist of one or a combination of any of the following:
  • Minerals
  • Vitamins
  • Amino acids
  • Metabolites
  • Herbs
  • Extracts
  • Botanicals

Which Supplements Should You Take?

There are hundreds of different types of supplements available on the market today. It is up to you and your doctor to decide which supplements are best for you and your unique needs. However, there are certain supplements that can benefit nearly every person in nearly every situation. Here is a quick look at some of the supplements we recommend all of our customers consider incorporating into their daily regime:

1. Alpha Base Capsules
This superior supplement by Ortho Molecular Products offers an important mix of micronutrients that play strong roles in boosting immune function and converting food into usable energy. These nutrients also help with cell regeneration, tissue repair, and detoxification.*

2. Ortho Biotics
Your gut is home to literally billions of microorganisms. These microorganisms must be maintained in a careful balance in order for them - and you - to thrive. Unfortunately, this balance can be upset by any number of different things, including medications, antibiotics, excessive alcohol, oral contraceptives, and poor diet. Ortho Biotic offers seven probiotic strains that have been proven to withstand challenging conditions, thus helping to restore the population in your GI tract.*

3. Orthomega
Omega-3 fatty acids are a crucial component of overall health. They offer multiple benefits, such as support for the cardiovascular system and support for healthy brain cognition and function. The body cannot produce omega-3 fatty acids on its own, so you must consume them regularly in order to maintain proper supply. Orthomega is a high-quality fish oil supplement that, in addition to providing the benefits we just discussed, also helps maintain healthy joints, skin, and connective tissues.*

4. Traumeric
Inflammation is the body's natural, healthy response to harmful stimuli that may pose a threat to overall health, such as bacteria or viruses. When part of the body becomes inflamed, it is flooded by white blood cells and immune cells that work to protect the body from this threat. If the body's natural processes become imbalanced, the inflammation response may fail to perform correctly. Traumeric is a unique formula of natural ingredients that are specifically designed to support the immune system by cultivating a balanced inflammatory response. It also supports the musculoskeletal system.*

8 Ways To Strengthen Your Immune System This Flu Season

The colder weather and changing leaves make it impossible to ignore - fall is officially here. The changing temperatures (coupled with the new school year that is now in full swing) can take a serious toll on your immune system if you aren't prepared. This flu season, your friends at The Lime in the Coconut Specialty Compounding Pharmacy are here to help you stay ahead of the game with these simple but effective strategies to strengthen your immune system.

1. Avoid Sugary Foods
It can be hard to avoid sugar's enticing (and often downright addicting) lure, but consuming large quantities of sugar weakens your immune system. This can make you more susceptible to the germs that you will inevitably be exposed to this flu season. Do your immune system a favor by cutting back on sweet treats.

2. Get Plenty Of Sleep
Our body regenerates during sleep. A short night here and there may not be too problematic, but if you have several short nights in a row, you can begin to rack up sleep debt. Sleep deprivation is hard on your entire body, and your immune system is no exception.

3. Take A Vitamin D Supplement
Low vitamin D levels often correlate with greater risks of developing respiratory infections. Unfortunately, Americans as a whole suffer from a chronic vitamin D deficiency. As the days become shorter and the temperatures become colder, we'll get even less of this important vitamin. Offset this deficiency by taking a natural, high-quality supplement.

4. Drink Elderberry Juice
In the holistic health circles, elderberry juice is praised for its amazing immune-boosting qualities. A little bit goes a long way; it doesn't take much to see some fantastic benefits. Most people recommend taking 1-2 tablespoons per day.

5. Eat Raw Fruits And Vegetables
Nature's bounty offers a great resource for strengthening your immune system. Raw or home-cooked vegetables, fruits, grains, and nuts offer multiple health benefits. Since they each offer different benefits, it is important to consume a variety.

6. Take A Probiotic
Probiotics have been shown to be enormously beneficial for improving gastrointestinal and respiratory health. There are types of probiotic supplements, and some are more beneficial than others. Be sure you're getting one that will be the most helpful for your body.

7. Limit Alcohol Intake And Tobacco Use
Products like alcohol and tobacco are hard on the body. If your body's systems have to work harder to process the alcohol or tobacco it is exposed to, it will have fewer resources leftover to guard against germs, bacteria, and viruses. Cutting back on alcohol and tobacco use is always beneficial, but it is especially important during flu season.

8. Get Plenty Of Exercise
The "use it or lose it" maxim applies to exercise and the physical benefits it provides. Consistent exercise offers protection against a wide array of health challenges, including osteoporosis, heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure, and more. By keeping your body in good condition, it will be better prepared to fight off the germs it will inevitably be exposed to this time of year.

Get Your Immune-Boosting Agents At The Lime!
In addition to compounded medication, our pharmacy at the Lake of the Ozarks offers a wide variety of over-the-counter immune-boosting agents. 8 Best-Kept Secrets For Healthy Aging

Aging gracefully - it's something we all want to do, but also something that very few of us feel that we know how to do. We hold on desperately to our youthful appearance, possibly a little frightened of what the future holds for us if we somehow fail to maintain the youthful looks and mind we have been blessed with for the first half of our lives.

Though aging may be a somewhat daunting prospect, it is a natural process that all people (providing they live long enough) will go through. At The Lime in the Coconut Specialty Compounding Pharmacy, our job is to help people age gracefully and healthily. In honor of Healthy Aging Month, we're sharing some of our favorite tips and tricks in this week's blog post.

1. Stay Active
Maintaining an active lifestyle is one of the most important things you can do to not only age well but also to promote longevity. Our bodies operate under a "use it or lose it" modality; if we don't make it a point to stay active as we age, we may lose the ability to do so altogether. Walking, biking, swimming, hiking, yoga, and kayaking are all great examples of fun ways to stay active.

2. Quit Smoking
Smoking is infamous for being terrible for your health, and for good reason. Smoking is closely linked to lung cancer and frequently contributes to asthma, emphysema, and other respiratory diseases. Because of nicotine's highly addictive qualities, it can take several attempts to fully break the smoking habit. However, it's an essential step towards achieving a long, healthy life.

3. Eat Healthy Foods
Contrary to popular belief, a healthy diet can actually be delicious. It may mean substituting some of your old staples for more fruits, veggies, and whole grains, but you will likely feel so much better that the trade-off should easily be worth it. You can pick the exact diet that works best for you, but as a general rule, you should try to avoid consuming too much red meat and foods that are extremely salty, sweet, and/or processed.

4. Stay Connected
Feeling connected to your friends, family, and/or community is an integral part of aging gracefully. Older adults who lead rather solitary lifestyles are much more likely to develop dementia or Alzheimer's, or pass away earlier. If you live alone, it's important to break up the solitude by volunteering or scheduling frequent visits with friends and family.

5. Quit Drinking
Enjoying alcoholic beverages is a favorite pastime for many people, especially here at the Lake. While the occasional drink here and there may not have too dire of an effect, consuming too much alcohol can lead to serious health problems such as chronic liver inflammation and jaundice. Your liver is responsible for breaking down harmful and/or unnatural substances in the body, but if it becomes overworked from too much alcohol consumption, it may no longer be able to do its job.

6. Get Plenty Of Sleep
Somewhere along the line, "successful" Americans began to pride themselves on their incessantly busy lifestyles. Sleep became viewed as a luxury, rather than a necessity. However, the truth remains that sleep is vital to our health. Adults typically require seven to nine hours of sleep per night to maintain optimum health, but most of us get much less than that. Inadequate sleep can inhibit our immune system and make us more susceptible to mental challenges such as irritability and depression.

7. Avoid Stress
Stress is one of the most abundant and chronic health challenges our society faces today. Stress causes numerous physical and psychological problems, ranging anywhere from headaches to depression, and studies suggest that symptoms like these affect well over half of all Americans. Chronic stress keeps our body in a constant "fight or flight" response state, which weakens our adrenal system and makes us more susceptible to illnesses.

8. Take Control Of Your Health
Don't wait for a healthy lifestyle to magically manifest - take active steps to work towards achieving optimum health as you age. Our compounding pharmacy in Lake Ozark MO will be here to help you in any way we can. In addition to our compounded medication in mid-Missouri, we offer a variety of over-the-counter vitamins and supplements to help you maintain a healthy lifestyle. 7 Best Foods To Eat When You Have A Cold

We usually think of cold and flu season as something that occurs during the cooler months, but it seems like everyone has been battling a nasty cold lately. While some of it may just be allergies, it seems hard to deny that many people around the Lake are battling a particularly stubborn cold or cough that simply doesn't want to let up.

If you have been struggling to overcome an ongoing cough or cold, our specialty compounding pharmacy at the Lake of the Ozarks is here to help you get back on your feet. Medicine, supplements, and diet all play an important role in combating an illness.

Best Foods To Eat When You Have A Cold

While we certainly recommend and encourage you to take medicines and supplements designed to combat the symptoms you are experiencing, it's important to recognize that your diet and overall nutrition play an important role in the healing process as well. If you have been struggling with a cold or cough, we recommend incorporating some (or all) of the following list of foods into your diet.

1. Garlic
Garlic contains a powerful antioxidant that works wonders for your immune system. People who take garlic are less likely to get sick in the first place, and those who do get sick typically recover much faster. Its health benefits are strongest when it is consumed raw.

2. Citrus Fruits
Citrus fruits, such as oranges, grapefruits, and lemons, are high in vitamin C. Since eating lemons is usually rather unpleasant, you can substitute by putting slices of it in hot tea or water. (As a side note, red bell peppers are also high in vitamin C.)

3. Fish
Oily fish contain a lot of omega-3 fatty acids, which help reduce the inflammation that may be preventing your immune system from fully functioning. Tuna, salmon, and mackerel are all good options.

4. Hot Tea
Hot tea does more than soothe a sore throat; the right tea can also provide your body with valuable nutrients. For best results, we recommend drinking immune-boosting herbal teas, such as echinacea or elderberry. Don't forget to add lemon and honey!

5. Greek Yogurt
Bacteria isn't always a bad thing - in fact, good bacteria is essential to maintaining proper health. Greek yogurt is high in probiotics that can help replenish strains of healthy bacteria in your gut. Watch the sugar content in the yogurt you choose, however - a large amount of sugar may actually counteract the positive effects of the probiotics.

6. Mushrooms
Believe it or not, mushrooms may also be a health "super food." Most of the mushrooms commonly found in grocery stores contain fiber, vitamin B, potassium, and several immune-boosting antioxidants.

7. Dark Leafy Greens
Leafy greens are packed with enough nutrients to practically keep you healthy all on their own. Kale, beat tops, arugula, spinach, and other dark greens contain vitamin C, vitamin K, iron, calcium, folate, fiber, and cartenoids (among other things). A general rules is that the darker the leaf, the more health benefits it offers.

The Lime Is Here To Help With Your Health-Related Needs

Eating these types of nutrient-rich foods is a great place to start, but your efforts to keep your body healthy shouldn't stop there. Consistent exercise is also important, and you may want to consider taking a few over-the-counter supplements as well.

One of the supplements we highly recommend is vitamin D. Proper amounts of vitamin D are essential in order to maintain optimum health. Good levels of vitamin D promote strong bone health, reduce the risk of upper respiratory infections, and boost the immune system. Unfortunately, most Americans suffer from a chronic vitamin D deficiency. Spending more time in the sun can help improve your vitamin D levels, as well as consuming mushrooms and fortified milk or orange juice. Dietary supplements can be incredibly beneficial as well.
