The Lime In The Coconut: Not Just Your Average Pharmacy

At our Lake of the Ozarks compounding pharmacy, we have one primary goal: to help our clients be healthiest (and happiest!) that they can be. We have been in business for almost ten years, and in that time we have developed several unique skills, techniques, and services that set us apart from other pharmacies in the area. This week, we thought we'd share with you some of the unique things that make the Lime in the Coconut Specialty Compounding Pharmacy your #1 resource for all your pharmaceutical needs.

We Fit Our Medications To Our Patients (Not The Other Way Around)

As the Lake's exclusive compounding-only pharmacy, each of our prescriptions are customized to each of our patients. Standardized medication is mass-produced in set dosages that may or may not be ideal for the patients taking them. By making each prescription specifically for the patient taking it, we ensure that the dosage amounts are perfectly aligned with their needs.

We Really Get To Know Our Customers

Your health is one of your top priorities - shouldn't it also be a top priority for the people making your medication? Our pharmacist and the rest of our staff makes a point to get to know our clients beyond their basic pharmaceutical needs. At The Lime, you're far more than just a prescription number; we are proud to treat our clients like the valued individuals that they are.

We Offer More Than Just Compounding

Compound medication is our primary service and it's what we are known for, but our services extend far beyond that. In addiction to prescription medication, we offer...
  • A variety of herbal supplements and vitamins
  • Massage therapy
  • CranioSacral Therapy
  • Rx Skin Therapy products
  • Young Living essential oils
  • And more!

Our Patients Feel At Home Here

Prescription drugstores and most retail pharmacies are rather uninviting; patients rush in, grab their prescriptions, and go. While we can certainly accommodate our patients' busy schedules, we want everyone to feel at home in our pharmacy in Lake Ozark MO. Everyone on our staff is warm and welcoming, and our decor matches our personality.

Come See For Yourself!

We're the best pharmacy at the Lake of the Ozarks, but you don't have to take our word for it! Check out the customer reviews on our Facebook page to see what our clients have to say about our pharmacy. You are also more than welcome to stop and see us at any time. We truly look forward to serving you!

Compounding to Relieve Allergy Symptoms

Most Midwesterners welcome the cooler fall weather but some allergy sufferers are less enthusiastic. In Missouri, cool nights can mean ragweed pollen is in the air. Ragweed, the biggest fall allergy trigger, generally begins to release pollen in August and continues into September and October and it’s possible this is the cause of those dreaded allergy symptoms. The ragweed pollen season occurs at a time when children, and school employees and administrators are going back to school. This is a common time for upper respiratory infections (colds) to make their debut and it can be difficult to determine whether symptoms are indications of allergies or a cold. Typically, cold symptoms lessen after 7 to 10 days, so if your runny nose, itchy, watery eyes, headaches and fatigue continue, you may be suffering from fall allergies.

At Lime in the Coconut Compounding Pharmacy we know that allergy sufferers need individual treatment options. We prepare personalized medications based on your specific needs. We can assist your physician by mixing the recommended prescriptions together to create a specialized treatment. Here’s more about allergy symptoms and how your Lake of the Ozarks Compounding pharmacy can help alleviate those symptoms.

Allergy symptoms may include: runny nose, itchy nose, nosebleeds, itchy throat and ears, sneezing, nasal congestion, burning, tearing, itchy eyes, cough, headaches, sinus infections, ear infections or ear pressure, asthma, and fatigue, poor sleep or snoring. Not everyone has all symptoms, that’s why our individual treatment options will address and respond to the specific immune reactions your body is having to the allergy.

At Lime in The Coconut, we have the capability to compound custom medications to treat many of the conditions associated with allergies. Our team specializes in formulating topical creams and gels, eye drops, nasal and throat sprays and easy to swallow capsules. We carefully prepare sinus and allergy medications in the form of liquids, washes and nasal sprays and can compound one pill with several different active ingredients if your general practitioner requests such treatment.

Also, consider CranioSacral therapy as a means to reduce sinus symptoms and headache associated with seasonal allergies. This massage therapy focuses on releasing tensions your body could be experiencing as a result of pollen in the air, and provides effective relief and reduction for some allergy symptoms.

Are you tired of sniffling, sneezing and blowing that nose of yours? We can compound custom sinus medications to treat your allergic reactions as needed. Not only can the benefits of compounding improve your allergy symptoms, but will also enhance your overall health.  Let Lime and the Coconut  Compounding Pharmacy help you find relief so you can stop carrying around that box of Kleenex and get back to feeling your very best. We want you out enjoying this beautiful fall weather as healthy as possible!

Compounding Can Provide Pain Relief

September is Pain Awareness Month, and we're guessing you're just as aware of your pain this month as you were last month. Living with chronic pain can be a struggle that you would probably rather do without. This is exactly why the Lime in the Coconut Compounding Pharmacy continues to do what we do.

There are more than 100-million adults in the United States suffer from chronic pain, which is more than cancer, heart disease, and diabetes - combined. There are many different types of chronic pain that can be experienced, and we're going to show several ways that the Lime in the Coconut can help.

Types of Pain We Can Treat
As the only compounding pharmacy at the Lake of the Ozarks, we have many options to help you treat your pain. Our methods are just as unique as you are because we create your medications for you and your specific need. Here are just a few of the different types of pain we can treat:
  • Migraines
  • Arthritis
  • Nerve Pain
  • Muscle Pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Sports Injuries

Pain Management Formulas
Because we realize that every single person is different, we pull from a variety of different pain management formulas. We use a variety of pain formulas because want to find a solution for your individual needs. Here are a few formulas that we can utilize:
  • Nerve Blocking Agents
  • Muscle Relaxants
  • Analgesics
  • NSAIDs
  • Combination Drugs

Custom Delivery Methods & Dosages
The advantage of compounding creams is that we can customize and provide an alternate method of delivery. We can combine the ingredients of traditional oral pain medications in a topical gel, cream, or spray form that you can then apply directly to the site of the pain. For migraine sufferers, pain medication may be administered through nasal sprays or flavored troches or lozenges. These dosage forms bypass the gastrointestinal tract, and may provide optimal results without the side effects.

Because our patients vary in size, symptoms, and pain tolerance, commercially available medications often do not provide an appropriate dosage strength. Through compounding, we can customize a medication to the exact amount needed.

Pain Dosage Forms
Different pain can require a different form of medication. In addition to the ingredients, the way the dosage is delivered has a big impact on the effectiveness of your pain medication. At our compounding pharmacy, we can put common pain management formulas into a variety of different dosage forms, including:
  • Transdermal Creams
  • Topical Creams, Ointments, & Gels
  • Troches (lozenges)
  • Mouth Rinses
  • Extended Release Capsules
  • Transdermal Gels
  • Suppositories
  • Nasal Sprays

Treating Pain In a Unique Way
You are unique. Shouldn't your medicine be too? At the Lime in the Coconut Compounding Pharmacy at the Lake of the Ozarks, we work with you and your healthcare professional to create a medication that can treat your pain. With September being all about Pain Awareness Month, make this month the time you address your pain. Let the Lime in the Coconut assist you with this!

8 Best-Kept Secrets For Healthy Aging

Aging gracefully - it's something we all want to do, but also something that very few of us feel that we know how to do. We hold on desperately to our youthful appearance, possibly a little frightened of what the future holds for us if we somehow fail to maintain the youthful looks and mind we have been blessed with for the first half of our lives.

Though aging may be a somewhat daunting prospect, it is a natural process that all people (providing they live long enough) will go through. At The Lime in the Coconut Specialty Compounding Pharmacy, our job is to help people age gracefully and healthily. In honor of Healthy Aging Month, we're sharing some of our favorite tips and tricks in this week's blog post.

1. Stay Active
Maintaining an active lifestyle is one of the most important things you can do to not only age well but also to promote longevity. Our bodies operate under a "use it or lose it" modality; if we don't make it a point to stay active as we age, we may lose the ability to do so altogether. Walking, biking, swimming, hiking, yoga, and kayaking are all great examples of fun ways to stay active.

2. Quit Smoking
Smoking is infamous for being terrible for your health, and for good reason. Smoking is closely linked to lung cancer and frequently contributes to asthma, emphysema, and other respiratory diseases. Because of nicotine's highly addictive qualities, it can take several attempts to fully break the smoking habit. However, it's an essential step towards achieving a long, healthy life.

3. Eat Healthy Foods
Contrary to popular belief, a healthy diet can actually be delicious. It may mean substituting some of your old staples for more fruits, veggies, and whole grains, but you will likely feel so much better that the trade-off should easily be worth it. You can pick the exact diet that works best for you, but as a general rule, you should try to avoid consuming too much red meat and foods that are extremely salty, sweet, and/or processed.

4. Stay Connected
Feeling connected to your friends, family, and/or community is an integral part of aging gracefully. Older adults who lead rather solitary lifestyles are much more likely to develop dementia or Alzheimer's, or pass away earlier. If you live alone, it's important to break up the solitude by volunteering or scheduling frequent visits with friends and family.

5. Quit Drinking
Enjoying alcoholic beverages is a favorite pastime for many people, especially here at the Lake. While the occasional drink here and there may not have too dire of an effect, consuming too much alcohol can lead to serious health problems such as chronic liver inflammation and jaundice. Your liver is responsible for breaking down harmful and/or unnatural substances in the body, but if it becomes overworked from too much alcohol consumption, it may no longer be able to do its job.

6. Get Plenty Of Sleep
Somewhere along the line, "successful" Americans began to pride themselves on their incessantly busy lifestyles. Sleep became viewed as a luxury, rather than a necessity. However, the truth remains that sleep is vital to our health. Adults typically require seven to nine hours of sleep per night to maintain optimum health, but most of us get much less than that. Inadequate sleep can inhibit our immune system and make us more susceptible to mental challenges such as irritability and depression.

7. Avoid Stress
Stress is one of the most abundant and chronic health challenges our society faces today. Stress causes numerous physical and psychological problems, ranging anywhere from headaches to depression, and studies suggest that symptoms like these affect well over half of all Americans. Chronic stress keeps our body in a constant "fight or flight" response state, which weakens our adrenal system and makes us more susceptible to illnesses.

8. Take Control Of Your Health
Don't wait for a healthy lifestyle to magically manifest - take active steps to work towards achieving optimum health as you age. Our compounding pharmacy in Lake Ozark MO will be here to help you in any way we can. In addition to our compounded medication in mid-Missouri, we offer a variety of over-the-counter vitamins and supplements to help you maintain a healthy lifestyle. Pharmacist of the Month: Sharon G. Hagan, RPh

The Lime in the Coconut Compounding Pharmacy is proud to announce that Sharon Hagan was chosen as the Pharmacist of the month in Professional Compounding Centers of America's (PCCA) August publication. We are honored that she was chosen for such a wonderful publication, and would like to share the article with you.

You can learn a bit more about Sharon, as well as how The Lime in the Coconut was started, and why we love being the best compounding pharmacy at the Lake of the Ozarks!

A Path to Compounding
Sharon Hagan has been compounding for about 12 years, but she's been in pharmacy for longer. "When I was 18, I was employed as a pharmacy technician," she says. "I really loved my job - especially the interaction with the customers." And she still does. But while working as a technician, her pharmacist, Larry Kimble, encouraged her to apply to the University of Missouri - Kansas City School of Pharmacy. "I was a tech for 16 years when I finally applied and was accepted," she says.

Then, Sharon discovered PCCA. "I had only combined some simple creams and magic mouthwash when I discovered PCCA," she says. It was an important point for her. "W-O-W!" She exclaims. "What an eye-opening experience!"

Moving forward, Sharon opened The Lime in the Coconut in 2007 "in order to offer an alternative to traditional medications," she says. And from her current position, she can both reflect back on her years in pharmacy and look forward to possibilities to come.

"The profession of pharmacy has always intrigued me, more so now than ever before," she says. "I love compounding; it allows a pharmacist to truly make a change in the lives of patients."

Favorite Formulas
One of Sharon's favorite formulas is a new addition to her repertoire. "We have added dermatology to our compounding strengths." she says, "and one formula seems to stand out - PCCA Formula #11639 (Potassium Azelaoyl Diglycinate 15%/Niacinamide 5% Topical Cream (Clarifying TM)), for our patients with rosacea." She adds that "it is an excellent formula for inflammation, erythema, skin discoloration, as well as being an antioxidant and stimulator of microcirculation." And she likes the base, specifically: "The unique avocado extract in Clarifying Base nourishes skin and decreases oil formation. My patients love this formula!"

Share also like PCCA Formula #10357 - Enrofloxacin 2% /Ketoconazole 2%/Triamcinolene 0.5% Poloxamer Otic Gel. "Thank you, Chris Simmons!" she exclaims, referring to our Vice President of Creative Development and true veterinary compounding innovator. "This one is a home run!" she adds. "Veterinarians, as well as pet owners, benefit from a one-time application instead of holding a large dog down for ear drops twice a day."

The Success Is In the Stories
Sharon and her crew at The Lime in the Coconut have had success with PCCA Formula #3408 - Tetracaine HCI 0.025% Popsicle. "A local doctor called us for help with a young girl who had dehydrated to the point of needing to be hospitalized for IV therapy," Sharon recalls. "She had stopped eating and drinking because of her sore throat." Fortunately, though, the tetracaine popsicles helped, and the doctor was pleasantly surprised when the girl started eating and drinking again. "We have created a great relationship with this doctor because of this one formula that turned her on to us," Sharon Says. "She now writes for other formulas as well."

Sharon's also had good experiences with PCCA Formula #0710 - Dibucaine HCI 0.5%/Hydroxyquinoline Sulfate 0.1% Topical Stick. "We call this our 'Chigger Stick,'," she says. "A mother came in and had her son with her," Sharon says, recalling a specific case. "He had numerous bug bites that he had been scratching the heck out of." So they called the doctor and got a prescription for - believe it or not - "Chigger Stick." "The little boy immediately applied it to the bites and said, 'Mommy, it's a magic stick. No more itchy!"

Sharon remembers another case well. "A lady came in a pulled a Chigger Stick out of her purse from a compounding pharmacy in the state that she had recently  moved from, " she says. There was one little problem, though, but Sharon saw an opportunity. "It was outdated by approximately seven years," she says. "She said she carried it in her purse always, and disregarded the expiration date because it still worked for her," says Sharon. "Humored by this, I offered to replace it for her at no cost." Opportunity seized: "She became one of my patients requiring compounds for BHRT and pain management," Sharon says. "You never know where a little Chigger Stick will take you..."

Words For a New Compounder
As you may expect from her success stories, Sharon's combined experience in pharmacy and business has taught her the importance of developing and maintaining relationships. "On a regular basis (weekly, monthly, etc.), commit to taking a doctor out to dinner," Sharon offers as advice. "You will have their complete, undivided attention for approximately two hours; will build a lasting relationship with them; and will not have had the expense, hustle, and bustle of feeding the whole office during lunch hour."

Can Compounding Help With Acne?

Acne is a skin problem that most often occurs in teenagers, but it is not uncommon for adults to be affected by it too. Medical compounding is an excellent way to tackle this problem. Another great way to get your skin back to normal is to understand acne better. The Lime in the Coconut has gathered a little information to help you recognize the reasons that acne may occur.

What is Acne?

The technical definition of acne is: "the occurrence of inflamed or infected sebaceous glands in the skin; in particular, a condition characterized by red pimples, especially on the face, neck, back, and chest." It is a skin condition that happens when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells.

Common Causes of Acne

The 4 main things that can attribute to acne in a person are:

  • Oil production
  • Dead skin cells
  • Bacteria in pores
  • Family history of acne
The reason that this disease most often occurs in teenagers is because that during puberty, the oil glands under the skin grow and begin producing more oil than they previously did. It is not solely a teenage problem, though. Changes in hormone levels in a body contribute to acne too. For example, this can happen during a pregnancy or in times of great mental stress or anxiety.

Compounding for Acne

Your physician will most likely prescribe a few topical ointments to combat the acne. In severe cases, the help of a dermatologist may be required, and occasionally the addition of oral medications are necessary.

Our compounding pharmacy at the Lake of the Ozarks is able to combine multiple medications into a single dosage, making it much easier to get the medicine you need into your system. We can also adjust strengths of medications to treat your particular case of acne. Traditional medicines are created to treat a vast amount of people, and in some cases may be too strong or too weak for your particular situation.

There are also many different ways that we can compound your medications to be delivered to you. Compounding for acne allows you to get the help you personally need through extremely effective, easy to use methods that are made to fit the needs of your body.

Additional Ways to Battle Acne

In addition to the compounding, we offer to treat acne, following these tips can help your skin to heal:

  • Wash the affected skin twice daily with a gentle cleanser
  • Keep your hands away from your face as much as possible.
  • Don't pop pimples. This can cause additional bacteria to invade your pores, making the acne worse and in some cases it will cause scarring to occur.
  • Never go to sleep with makeup on.
  • Only use makeup that is oil-free and does not clog pores.
  • Keep greasy lotions and hair products off of your skin.
  • Let acne-prone skin breathe. Do not wear tight clothing, hats, headbands, etc... that can block the skin and hold bacteria in.

Let Us Help You Achieve the Clear Skin You Desire

The Lime in the Coconut in Lake Ozark would love to help you or your teenager get rid of acne. Give us a call today so that we can work together to find the best ways to make that happen. Compounding for acne is a wonderful way to get exactly what your skin needs in the most convenient way for you possible.
