Understanding The Gut-Brain Connection

As everyone knows, the brain is a complex organ housed in the skull. Your brain is responsible for handling every one of your body's functions, both conscious and unconscious. However, modern research is revealing that there is a actually "second brain" - one responsible for its fair share of bodily functions and emotions. Believe it or not, this second brain is actually housed inside your gut. The Lime in the Coconut Specialty Compounding Pharmacy is here to help you get a better understanding of this second brain.

The Brain In Your Gut

Though the concept of having a "brain" in your gut may seem odd at first, we're willing to bet that you are already more familiar with it than you realize. We commonly tell people to "go with your gut," the sensation of "butterflies in the stomach" is a common nervous reaction, and you may feel "sick to your stomach" when you think about a painful, unpleasant, or gruesome experience. These examples are everyday indicators of that which we have always known deep down - our gut is more than a static system of organs. The trick is learning to listen to what the brain in our gut is trying to tell us.

What The Second Brain Controls

The brain in your gut cannot form rational thoughts or logic its way through a problem like the brain in your head can. Instead, the gut brain's primary responsibility is controlling digestion. It manages every step of this complex (and crucial) biological process, from breaking down and absorbing nutrients to eliminating waste.

For many years, people have been well aware of the way certain emotions and mental health conditions impact the gastrointestinal system. It is not uncommon for individuals with chronic anxiety, stress, or depression to experience a number of gastrointestinal problems like bloating, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, upset stomach, etc. Short-term bursts of adrenaline can also disrupt the digestive system and cause loose stools, stomach cramping, or other complaints.

However, modern science has recently discovered that in some cases, things may not always happen in this order. In some situations, gastrointestinal health problems may actually cause mental health challenges such as anxiety and depression - it is not always the other way around.

Overall Health Is A Two-Way Street

The brain in your head and the brain in your gut are closely linked. In order to maintain optimum health, both brains must be tended to. Just as stress-relieving activities such as yoga, bubble baths, reading, and coloring are important, so are things that promote gut health. Here are a few examples of things you can do to improve gut health.
  • Take a probiotic.
  • Diversify your diet to include a wide range of fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains.
  • Eat fermented, probiotic-rich foods like kimchi, sauerkraut, tempeh, Greek yogurt, and kombucha.
  • Reduce the amount of artificial sweeteners you consume.

Studies also show that breastfeeding for at least six months is an important way to promote gut health in babies. Setting the stage for proper gut health from the very beginning can greatly contribute to better gut health later in life.

The Lime In The Coconut - Your Resource For Gut Health

At our compounding pharmacy at the Lake of the Ozarks, we are keenly aware of the relationship between the brain and the gut, as well as the importance of keeping both these systems healthy. We are proud to sell an elite line of probiotic supplements designed to help our clients maintain healthy gastrointestinal systems. If you would like to learn more about probiotics or gut health, call 573-964-6786 or stop by our pharmacy in Lake Ozark, MO and talk to one of our experienced team members.

Hormone Replacement Seminar at The Lime in the Coconut

Hormones are powerful natural chemicals. They control nearly all of our body's natural functions and influence countless other factors. As a few examples, hormones play a significant role in weight gain / loss, sleep schedules, mood, skin health (acne, dermatits, etc), and fertility. The list goes far beyond that, but these examples help illustrate the wide variety of factors that hormones influence.

Hormone Health

Because of the integral roles they play, maintaining proper hormonal balance is a crucial component of overall health. Throughout our lives, we expose ourselves to and undergo a variety of normal life situations that influence our body's natural hormone balance.

At the Lime in the Coconut Specialty Compounding Pharmacy, we dedicate a significant portion of our practice to helping clients achieve (and maintain) a healthy hormone balance. In order to further these efforts, we are hosting a seminar to help you get a better understanding of hormones and how their balance changes over time.

Hormone Replacement Seminar at the Lime

Though hormones are important for both men and women throughout every stage of life, our upcoming hormone replacement seminar is going to focus specifically on the hormonal changes women experience as they go through the various stages of menopause.

If you are experiencing...
  • Night sweats
  • Hot flashes
  • Mood swings
  • Irritability
  • Fatigue
  • Weight gain
  • Memory challenges
... this event will help answer your questions and help you devise a plan for alleviating these symptoms!

Hormone Replacement Seminar - Event Information

Space is limited, so we ask that you RSVP in advance by calling 573-964-6786. The deadline to RSVP is Wednesday, March 15th.

Learn About Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy!

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy can be a wonderfully effective way to minimize the symptoms of menopause (and other hormonal fluctuations and imbalances). Because bioidentical hormones are chemically identical to the ones found in the body, patients typically see few side effects when taking bioidentical hormones.

We hope you'll join us at our upcoming seminar so you can learn more about this powerful therapy and how it may be able to benefit you. You can also visit our website to learn more about bioidentical hormone replacement therapy at the Lake of the Ozarks, or give us a call at 573-964-6786. Our talented staff will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Compounding In Action: Medication To Fit Your Unique Needs

You go to the doctor for help with your recurring headaches. After a professional evaluation, your doctor prescribes a certain medication to help ease the pain. It is the same medication he previously prescribed to a different patient with a different complaint. What's wrong with this picture?

The Drawback of Standardized Medication

Though common, many patients agree that the above scenario is less than ideal. The primary problem with it is that the standard prescription given by the doctor is designed to help most patients most of the time. Because it is mass-produced, it cannot possibly account for the unique subtleties of each individual patient's needs. As a result, the benefits it offers will likely be countered by multiple unpleasant drawbacks that are commonly referred to as "side effects."

The Advantage of Customized Medication

Compounding fits the medication to the patient, not the other way around. It is the art of making each individual prescription specifically for its intended patient. This allows us to specifically accommodate each patient's needs.

Compounding can be used for countless different purposes, including pain management, sinus relief, sports medicine, dental procedures, veterinary medicine, and bio-identical hormone replacement.

Compounding In Action

From dosage form to ingredients, our compounding pharmacy at the Lake of the Ozarks can design each prescription to meet our patients' specific needs. Here are a few examples of the different ways compounding can be used to the advantage of individual patients.
  • Medicated lollipops and gelatin troches (lozenges) for kids who do not like the taste of liquids or for people who have difficulty swallowing a tablet.
  • Absorption delivery methods such as suppositories, troches, transdermal gels, or rapid-dissolve tablets for people suffering from nausea/vomiting.
  • Capsules with several different active ingredients, so people with multiple prescriptions can take only one pill.
  • Transdermal gels and creams containing non-steroidals and anesthetics for sports medicine.
  • Topical gels to prevent nausea and vomiting for travelers.
  • Flavored prescriptions to make it easier to treat cats and dogs (and people).

Compounding can be used to deliver needed medicine to patients with other specific needs as well. For example...
  • Patients with an intolerance for certain common ingredients in standardized prescriptions, including preservatives, lactose, gluten, sugar, and/or dyes.
  • Child patients who cannot take the adult prescription amount of their needed medicine.
  • Children, adults, and pets who cannot tolerate the flavor of standardized medication.
  • Vegetarian and/or vegan patients who have a moral, ethical, and/or dietary obligation to avoid animal-based ingredients.

Contact Us To Learn How Compounding Can Benefit You!

4 Things You Didn't Realize Disrupt Your Hormones

Hormones our our bodies' powerful internal chemical messengers. They control nearly every aspect of our day-to-day lives: metabolism, weight gain, menstrual cycles, fertility, mood and overall demeanor, and countless other factors. In order to maintain optimum performance and function, our hormone system (formally called the endocrine system) must maintain a delicate balance. Unfortunately, most of us subject ourselves to countless things that can affect that balance every single day.

As specialists in bio-identical hormone replacement therapy, we work extensively with hormones and help our patients restore balance to this delicate system. Today, we are here to explore some of the different external factors that can affect the endocrine system. If you're like most people, it's possible that you subject yourself to at least a few of these on a daily basis.

1. Plastic
Have you noticed that many of today's plastic products advertise that they are "BPA-free?" BPA stands for Bisphenol-A, which is a toxic chemical commonly used to make plastics in the U.S. When ingested, it can significantly affect estrogen levels. This has been shown to cause numerous adverse health effects, such as ADHD in children, prostate cancer in men, underdeveloped testes in male children, and fertility challenges in both women and men. It is especially dangerous to pregnant women, fetuses, and newborns. Unfortunately, even plastics that say they are BPA-free have been shown to leach this toxic chemical.

2. Health & Beauty Products
If you're like most people, you probably have quite a few different products on your bathroom countertop, on the shelves, and in the cabinets under the sink. Unfortunately, the vast majority of these products (unless you purchased them at specialty health-conscious stores) probably contain numerous dangerous chemicals. Parabens are a common example. They are used as preservatives in countless health and beauty products, including toothpaste, cosmetics, shampoos and conditioners, deodorants and antiperspirants, lotions, and sunscreens.

Experts believe that significant exposure to toxic chemicals, such as parabens, from such an early age is closely related to the increased incidences of breast and other cancers we are seeing in our society today. The exposure we subject our bodies to is incredibly significant - research reported on Mercola's website indicates that women absorb approximately five pounds of chemicals every year from their daily makeup routines.

3. Alcohol
Red wine (when consumed in small amounts) has been shown to offer a few health benefits - primarily reducing the risk of stroke and heart disease. However, most types of alcohol (including with red wine when consumed in large quantities) can wreak havoc on the hormones. Among other things, alcohol has been shown to increase the risk of osteoporosis, impair blood-sugar regulation, and decrease testosterone levels in men.

4. Stress
While they stem from mental health issues, stress and anxiety have significant physical impacts as well as mental ones. Your "fight or flight" response gets activated when you are under stress, which releases adrenaline into your system. This hormone readies your body to take the needed action to protect yourself by increasing oxygen flow, increasing heart rate, constricting blood vessels, dilating pupils, and directing energy away from bodily functions that are not as important to survival in the immediate moment (such as digestion).

These changes enormously beneficial when facing immediate dangers, but when activated for extended amounts of time (as is the case in people battling chronic stress and anxiety), they can cause serious health problems.

The Lime In The Coconut Can Help You Regulate Your Hormones
These are just a few examples (on a very long list) of things that affect your hormones. Your diet, aging, and the dangerous chemicals (in addition to parabens) found in countless standard consumer products can also wreak havoc on your endocrine system.

A good way to balance your hormones is to eat a clean diet and avoid exposure to harsh chemicals that may negatively impact your hormone system. Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy may be another helpful option. We compound hormones that, on a molecular level, are identical to the hormones produced in the body. By creating prescriptions designed specifically for you, our compounding pharmacy in Central Missouri can help realign your body's hormonal system in accordance with its normal state.

Customized Medication For Every Step Of Life's Journey

Always remember that you are unique - just like everybody else!

Human beings are intrinsically unique creatures. No two of us are alike. We all have different needs, different thoughts, different passions, different emotions, and different bodies.

The problem with the modern medical world is that it frequently attempts to lump hundreds of unique beings into predetermined categories and boxes. Standardized medication is prefabricated and mass-produced on a grand scale, made in accordance with the prescription that fits "most people."

Unfortunately, standardized prescriptions cannot possibly account for the unique needs of each individual patient. Consequently, patients frequently suffer numerous unpleasant side effects when taking the medication that is supposed to make them better.

Enter Compounding Medication

Compounding medication is designed to break the pattern. Instead of forcing patients to conform to prefabricated prescriptions, our Lake of the Ozarks compounding pharmacy creates each prescription specifically for its intended patient. We customize the ingredients, dosage amounts, and dosage form of each prescription to meet the needs of its intended recipient.

Quality Medication For Everyone You Love

Your health and your family are the two most important parts of your life. Lime in the Coconut Specialty Compounding Pharmacy is here to help improve the health of all the most important people in your life. We offer customized medication for people of all ages, from your brand new baby to your great-great-grandmother.

Of course, many families would be incomplete without their four-legged members. We offer top-quality veterinary compounding in central Missouri to better support the health of your fur-babies. We have experiencing mixing compounding medication for both dogs and cats. We can also flavor your pet's medication in accordance with her preferences, thus eliminating the challenge of getting your pet to take her medicine.

Quality Medication For All Stages Of Life

Life is a long and winding journey. Each stage of life is filled with its own unique challenges, joys, obstacles, and excitements. We offer multiple types of compounded medication to help support you through every chapter in your life. Diaper rash, acne, sports injuries, fever blisters, head lice, infertility, migraines, bad breath, postpartum recovery, UTIs, sore throats, menopause, and andropause are just a few examples of the many different health situations that can benefit from compounded medication.

The Lime In The Coconut - Your Trusted Ally On Life's Journey

No matter where you are on life's journey, we hope you'll consider The Lime in the Coconut your trusted resource any time you are in need of a little extra help on your path towards health. We recognize (and celebrate!) the uniqueness of each individual patient we serve, and we promise to do everything we can to create a medication that will meet your specific needs.
