Why Compounding?

Compounding is the art and science of preparing customized medications for patients. Today, medications are becoming patient driven. We've all seen the commercials for medications that say "Ask your doctors if this drug right for you." Pharmaceutical companies are investing millions in mass marketing to patients, with no thought given to the individual. Compounding medication is customizing it to fit the patient's individual needs.  One medication doesn't always help multiple people. We fit the medication to the patient. We can compound medications to help with a number of problems such as:

  • Acne
  • Arthritis
  • Andropause
  • Autistic Spectrum
  • Alzheimers & Parkinsons
  • Bad Breath
  • Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement
  • Chronic Diaper Rash
  • Chronic Pain Management
  • Chronic UTI's and Vaginitis
  • Dental
  • Exercise & Sports Injuries
  • Fever Blisters
  • Flavoring
  • Fungal Infections
  • Head Lice
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Hospice
  • Hyperhidrosis
  • Infertility
  • Migraines
  • Muscle Aches & Cramps
  • Nausea & Vomiting
  • Chronic Sinusitis
  • Oral Lesions
  • Otic Infections
  • Pain Creams
  • Pets
  • Postpartum Needs
  • Rectal Rockets
  • Scars & Keloids
  • Sore Throat
  • Snoring
  • Warts
  • Weight Loss
  • Wound Therapy
  • Wrinkles & Age Spots

If you are tired of standard medication and those types of medications just aren't working for you, give the Lime in the Coconut a try.

4 Amazing Benefits of Compounding

If you know anything about the Lime in the Coconut Pharmacy, you know that we are the only exclusive compounding pharmacy at the Lake of the Ozarks. We proudly mix each and every prescription specifically for its intended patient - none of our prescriptions are produced in bulk. This unique attention to detail lends itself to not only stellar customer service, but phenomenal results as well. This week, we are here to explore some of the unique benefits that compound medication offers.

1. Reduced Side Effects

While most prescription medication can benefit patients when used as directed, it can also result in a host of undesirable side effects. From minor irritations such as itching or eczema to serious concerns such as heart attack or stroke, standardized medication can cause any number of unwanted (and sometimes downright dangerous) side effects. At the Lime in the Coconut Specialty Compounding Pharmacy, we don't believe our patients should have to suffer unpleasant side effects in order to treat a certain symptom.

Because each prescription is formulated specifically for its intended patient, we can customize the dosage amounts to meet each patient's individual needs. This not only provides better results, but can minimize the body's exposure to unneeded ingredients that may be responsible for the unpleasant side effects.

2. Fewer Allergens

Allergens are a common concern among many standardized prescriptions. Standardized medication does not have a way to accommodate patients who need a certain medication but are allergic to one (or more) of the ingredients used to make it. Because pharmaceutical compounding requires that each medication be made specifically for its intended patient, we can leave out or substitute ingredients that may cause adverse reactions.

3. Increased Availability

Standardized medication is designed to meet most people's needs, most of the time. If there is not a wide need for a certain medication, it is not profitable for big pharmaceutical companies to continue producing it. If demand for a certain medication decreases, they may discontinue the product.

While they may not be great in number, some people may still have a significant need for the medication that the big pharmaceutical companies are no longer mass-producing. Fortunately, compound pharmacies can make specialized doses of the needed medication.

4. More Dosage Options

Humans are very unique creatures. What works for one person may not work at all for another. For example, many people can swallow pills without any problem, but other people cannot swallow pills because it triggers an intense gag reflex. Compound medication allows each medication to not only contain precise dosage amounts, but also be delivered in customized dosage forms.

If oral pain relievers are making you nauseous, for example, we can compound a topical pain gel that targets the problem area without having to pass through your digestive system. We can also compound medicated lollipops, troches (lozenges), suppositories, and other dosage forms.

Customized Medication For Every Step Of Life's Journey

Always remember that you are unique - just like everybody else!

Human beings are intrinsically unique creatures. No two of us are alike. We all have different needs, different thoughts, different passions, different emotions, and different bodies.

The problem with the modern medical world is that it frequently attempts to lump hundreds of unique beings into predetermined categories and boxes. Standardized medication is prefabricated and mass-produced on a grand scale, made in accordance with the prescription that fits "most people."

Unfortunately, standardized prescriptions cannot possibly account for the unique needs of each individual patient. Consequently, patients frequently suffer numerous unpleasant side effects when taking the medication that is supposed to make them better.

Enter Compounding Medication

Compounding medication is designed to break the pattern. Instead of forcing patients to conform to prefabricated prescriptions, our Lake of the Ozarks compounding pharmacy creates each prescription specifically for its intended patient. We customize the ingredients, dosage amounts, and dosage form of each prescription to meet the needs of its intended recipient.

Meet Our Pharmacist & Owner, Sharon Hagan RPh!

At The Lime in the Coconut Compounding Pharmacy, we're all about outstanding customer service and strong customer relationships. We care a great deal about our customers and we are honored to serve people all across Missouri (and even in some of the surrounding states). We believe that in order to best serve our clients, it is imperative that they feel comfortable with each of our staff members. In order to further support and promote our customer relationships, we're introducing the first of our brand new blog series: getting to know the staff at our Lake of the Ozarks compounding pharmacy!

Sharon Hagan, RPh
We're kicking things off with the woman who founded our business and who currently serves as our resident pharmacist and compounding expert: Ms. Sharon Hagan Rph. We asked her to answer several questions, and today we're sharing those answers with you. We hope you enjoy this opportunity to get to know Sharon a little bit better!

1. Where Did You Grow Up?
I grew up on Coal Street in Mexico, MO. I was the last of five children, with two older brothers and two older sisters.

2. Where Did You Attend School?
I graduated from Mexico High School in 1977. I later graduated from Moberly Community College in 1992, and finally UMKC School Of Pharmacy in 1998.

3. What Brought You To The Lake Of the Ozarks?
We had a vacation home at the Lake that my family and I would visit on weekends and holidays. We loved it here so much that we finally ended up moving down full-time.

4. Who Is Your Family?
I have the most wonderful husband in the world, Scott. We have been married for twenty-five years. We have two fantastic sons, Nickolas and Darin, and two exceptional daughters-in-law, Amanda and Bailey. We currently have one amazing granddaughter, Jordyn.

Back row from left to right: Darin, Bailey, Scott, Sharon, Amanda, Nick
Center: Jordyn
5. How Did You Get Started In The Compounding Industry?
Compounding has always been a passion of mine. Everywhere else I worked (before the creation of the Lime), my coworkers would always pass me any prescriptions for compounds because they know how much I loved to do it. In 2006 I was introduced to PCCA, a Houston-based company that provides training, chemicals, and compounding equipment, and the Lime was born!

6. What Is Your Favorite Thing About Your Job?
My favorite things about my job are the positive outcomes our patients experience from our compounding solutions. I love working with all of the doctors in the area to help with solutions for their patients.

7. What Is Something You Wish Everyone Knew About Compounding?
I wish everyone knew that compounding is not merely copying a manufactured product - not at all, in fact! It is the best choice for personalized medication, providing the best possible dosage form for each particular patient.

8. If You Could Travel Anywhere In The World, Where Would You Go And Why?
I would go to Fiji. My husband and I are avid scuba divers and we would love to dive there.

Sharon and her husband, Scott
9. What Is Something Very Few People Know About You?
Hmmm... I suppose few people know that I love to scuba dive. Or that I want to have two horses and am currently learning all I can about how to care for them because I won't get them until I know how to care for them. OR that I'm going to be a grandma again, thanks my daughter-in-law Bailey!!! (Oh yes, and my wonderful son Darin, too.)

10. What Is Your Favorite Thing To Do When You're Not At Work?
When I'm not at the "pharm," I love spending time on my farm! When I'm not in the pharmacy lab, I love spending time with my two labs, Jack and Charlee.

What Is Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy?

Last week, we took an in-depth, real-life look at what compounded medication is and how it can improve your health. This week, we want to look specifically at a particularly unique type of compounded medication: bioidentical hormones.

What Are Bioidentical Hormones?

To put it simply, bioidentical hormones are manufactured hormones that, on a chemical and molecular level, are identical to the hormones found naturally in men and women's bodies. Thanks to this matching structure, bioidentical hormone replacement therapy is easier on the body and causes fewer side-effects than its artificial counterparts. At our Lake of the Ozarks compounding pharmacy, we work frequently with bioidentical sex hormones (estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone) as well as many other types of hormones, including DHEA and pregnenolone.

When Would You Take Bioidentical Hormones?

At many different times in our lives (and for any number of reasons) the hormone levels in men and women's bodies can become imbalanced. When our hormone levels are off balance, we can experience any number of undesirable symptoms:

  • Fatigue
  • Decreased Sex Drive
  • Irregular Menstrual Cycles
  • Weight Changes
  • Low Stress Tolerance
  • Vaginal Dryness
  • Yeast Infections
  • Depression
Unfortunately, this list barely scratches the surface of all the side effects than can result from having imbalanced hormones. Equally unfortunately, many of the traditional hormone replacement therapies cause just so many side effects that they may be more trouble than they are worth.

Since these sex hormones have the power to cause so many potential issues, then, it is crucial that you get your levels tested periodically to make sure you are maintaining a proper balance. If you discover that your hormone levels are imbalanced, it is important to seek help from an experienced compounding pharmacist.

Can The Lime In The Coconut Pharmacy Help With Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy?

In a word - yes! Absolutely. Our compounding pharmacy in central Missouri has spent several years compounding bioidentical hormones for our patients, and we are delighted to report that many of our patients have enjoyed wonderful benefits from their treatments. Our compounding pharmacist at the Lake of the Ozarks will hold an initial consultation with you to get started, after which you will receive a saliva test kit to take home with you. Once we receive your test results, we will contact your physician for a prescription so we can compound the medication for you.

Each individual is unique, and we firmly believe that the their medication should be as well. We compound each patient's medication specifically for them in order to best meet their individual needs. Depending your lifestyle and preference, we can deliver your dosage in a variety of different forms, including lozenges, sublingual tablets, topical creams, and suppositories.

Give Us A Call To Get Started!

If you would like to learn more about bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, set up a consultation with our pharmacist, or get more information about compounding in general, call The Lime In The Coconut Specialty Compounding Pharmacy at 573-964-6786. We are excited to work with you!
