7 Indications Your Hormones May Be Out Of Balance

As our bodies' natural chemical messengers, hormones control everything from our bodily functions to our emotional states to our development and growth. If your hormones become imbalanced (even if only slightly), they can wreak havoc on your system. It's important to take steps to bring your hormones back into balance as quickly as possible, but how can you tell when they are out of whack?

7 Signs Your Hormones Are Out Of Balance

Since we specialize in bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) at the Lake of the Ozarks, we work a great deal with both women and men who are suffering from the effects of imbalanced hormones. Here are a few signs we have identified that frequently indicate imbalanced hormones.

1. Inexplicable Weight Gain Or Loss
Your metabolism is in charge of burning necessary calories for energy and storing excess calories for fat. Hormones are in charge of regulating the metabolism, so if you are experiencing sudden weight gain or loss, it may be an indication that your hormones are off-balance.

2. Insomnia
The body's natural sleep cycle is governed by the circadian rhythms. This rhythm, in turn, is predominantly governed by hormones. If your hormones become imbalanced, you may experience a variety of sleep problems, such as reduced sleep quality and difficulty falling or staying asleep.

3. Excessive Sweating
Excessive sweating can be the result of hyper- and/or hypothyroidism. It can also stem from the hormonal changes that frequently accompany menopause and/or hormonal birth control. Excessive sweating is frequently associated with the common menopause symptom known as hot flashes.

4. Mood Swings
Mood swings are possibly the most well-known symptom frequently caused by imbalanced hormones. You could be happy and relaxed one minute, and then suddenly end up in tears - even from something as harmless as burnt toast. Over-charged emotional outbursts frequently accompany these mood swings.

5. Decreased Sex Drive
Because it stems from our species' natural reproductive urges, sex drive is largely regulated by the reproductive hormones (mainly testosterone, estrogen, and progesterone). If these hormones become imbalanced, you may notice a decrease in your sex drive.

6. Chronic Fatigue
In light of the other symptoms we have discussed thus far, you probably won't be surprised to learn that exhaustion is another complaint commonly experienced by people with imbalanced hormones. Inadequate sleep, emotionally-charged outbursts, and inhibited metabolism can all be very tiring.

7. Consistent Cravings
We've all been there - one minute you're focusing on something at home or work, and the next minute you can't stop thinking about a specific type of food or beverage. Cravings are more than irrational urges, however; they are usually your body indicating is in need of a certain nutrient due to a hormonal imbalance.

11 Nutrition Tips To Promote Healthy Hormones

March is National Nutrition Month. Though the month is nearly over, it's never too late to dedicate a little extra attention to our body's nutritional needs. Proper nutrition is essential to maintaining our body's optimum function, including mental heath, emotional health, physical health, and everything in between. This week, your friends at The Lime in the Coconut Specialty Compounding Pharmacy are here to look specifically at how you can improve your body's hormonal health through proper nutrition - but first, let's take a quick look at why hormonal balance is so important.

What Are Hormones?

Hormones are chemicals your body produces to control almost every aspects of its daily functions. Some people are surprised to learn what an all-encompassing effect hormones have on the body, as hormones are responsible for practically everything. For example, hormones impact your...
  • Mood
  • Weight gain
  • Pregnancy (and ability to conceive)
  • Immune system
  • Cognitive function
  • Sex drive
  • Energy level
  • Menstrual cycles
  • Stress level

The list goes on and on. There is practically no end to the list of ways hormones can affect you physically, emotionally, and mentally. Maintaining a proper hormonal balance is essential in order to stay healthy overall.

Nutrition Tips For A Healthy Hormonal Balance

We've established that maintaining a proper hormonal balance is essential, but how can you go about doing that? Our bodies are naturally equipped to produce and balance hormones properly, but it requires proper nutrition in order to do it. Here are a few tips to help you promote overall hormonal health.
  1. Eat Healthy Fats (coconut oil, olive oil, real butter, etc)
  2. Limit Caffeine Intake
  3. Make Sleep A Priority
  4. Eat A Variety Of Fruits And Vegetables Daily
  5. Consume Natural Probiotics (yogurt, kombucha, kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut, etc)
  6. Up Vitamin D Intake (fortified milk, fortified orange juice, mushrooms, salmon, etc)
  7. Avoid Toxic Chemicals (see our earlier blog post about everyday products that contain harsh chemicals)
  8. Eat High-Fiber Foods (beans, whole grains, vegetables, etc)
  9. Limit Alcohol Intake
  10. Get Plenty Of Protein
  11. Eat Cruciferous Vegetables (kale, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, etc)

The Lime Can Help You Balance Your Hormones!

Hormonal balance is something we often take for granted - we don't think anything of it when everything is working properly, but we become instantly aware (and upset) when something goes awry. If you are experiencing difficulties with any of the areas your hormonal balance impacts and are looking for options, our Lake of the Ozarks compounding pharmacy is here for you.

Balancing your nutrition with the eleven tips we discussed is enormously beneficial, but there are ways to augment your hormonal health. Our bioidentical hormone therapy (BHRT) services have helped hundreds of men and women balance their hormones and improve their overall physical, mental, and emotional health. For more information on how BHRT may be able to help you, visit our website or call us directly at 573-964-6786.

What Should Everyone Age 35+ Be Taking?

"Aging is not lost youth, but a new stage of opportunity and strength." - Betty Friedan

Aging is a natural process that every single one of us will go through. As we age, however, our bodies begin to need a little extra help here and there to maintain optimum health. At the Lime in the Coconut Compounding Pharmacy, we specialize in helping both women and men gracefully navigate our bodies' natural aging processes. For those of you over the age of thirty-five, here is a quick look at some of the supplements we recommend you take in order to keep your body healthy and well.

5 Supplements For Everyone Age 35+

1. Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Having proper levels of omega-3 fatty acids is very important for us to maintain healthy metabolisms. Common natural sources of omega-3 fatty acids include walnuts, flaxseed oil, fish oil, and egg oil. Omega-3 fatty acids can also be taken as an oral supplement (we recommend Orthomega).

2. Probiotic
Not all bacteria are harmful - in fact, some bacterial are essential for maintaining proper health. They help with digestion, boost your immune system, and several other things. Probiotics can be found naturally in fermented foods such as sauerkraut and kimchi, or they can be taken as a supplement. AT the Lime, we are strong believers in Ortho Biotic's probiotic supplements!

3. Multivitamin or Mineral Supplement
Multivitamins serve as a great way to improve your overall health. For most of us, our diets don't contain all of the vitamins and minerals our bodies need to be healthy, and a multivitamin can help fill in the gaps. If you are looking for an oral supplement, our compounding pharmacist at the Lake of the Ozarks recommends Alpha Base by Ortho Molecular. If you want an alternative to an oral supplement, our wellness IVs at the Lake of the Ozarks could be a great solution.

4. Vitamin D
Vitamin D plays a lot of different roles in the body, including the reduction of inflammation, the prevention of osteoporosis and arthritis, the regulation of blood pressure, and many other important factors. Shockingly, experts estimate approximately 75% of people in the U.S. are deficient in vitamin D. Our skin absorbs vitamin D from sunlight, but the amount that we absorb naturally isn't enough. Health experts recommend taking 5,000 units of vitamin D per day; we have supplements that can help ensure you reach this goal.

5. Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy
Our hormone levels fluctuate as we age, especially for women. Maintaining proper hormone levels is incredibly important for our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. We recommend testing your hormone levels and supplementing with bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) as necessary. As a specialty compounding pharmacy at the Lake of the Ozarks, we work frequently with BHRT. If you have any questions about it at all, please don't hesitate to reach out to us!

What Is Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy?

Last week, we took an in-depth, real-life look at what compounded medication is and how it can improve your health. This week, we want to look specifically at a particularly unique type of compounded medication: bioidentical hormones.

What Are Bioidentical Hormones?

To put it simply, bioidentical hormones are manufactured hormones that, on a chemical and molecular level, are identical to the hormones found naturally in men and women's bodies. Thanks to this matching structure, bioidentical hormone replacement therapy is easier on the body and causes fewer side-effects than its artificial counterparts. At our Lake of the Ozarks compounding pharmacy, we work frequently with bioidentical sex hormones (estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone) as well as many other types of hormones, including DHEA and pregnenolone.

When Would You Take Bioidentical Hormones?

At many different times in our lives (and for any number of reasons) the hormone levels in men and women's bodies can become imbalanced. When our hormone levels are off balance, we can experience any number of undesirable symptoms:

  • Fatigue
  • Decreased Sex Drive
  • Irregular Menstrual Cycles
  • Weight Changes
  • Low Stress Tolerance
  • Vaginal Dryness
  • Yeast Infections
  • Depression
Unfortunately, this list barely scratches the surface of all the side effects than can result from having imbalanced hormones. Equally unfortunately, many of the traditional hormone replacement therapies cause just so many side effects that they may be more trouble than they are worth.

Since these sex hormones have the power to cause so many potential issues, then, it is crucial that you get your levels tested periodically to make sure you are maintaining a proper balance. If you discover that your hormone levels are imbalanced, it is important to seek help from an experienced compounding pharmacist.

Can The Lime In The Coconut Pharmacy Help With Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy?

In a word - yes! Absolutely. Our compounding pharmacy in central Missouri has spent several years compounding bioidentical hormones for our patients, and we are delighted to report that many of our patients have enjoyed wonderful benefits from their treatments. Our compounding pharmacist at the Lake of the Ozarks will hold an initial consultation with you to get started, after which you will receive a saliva test kit to take home with you. Once we receive your test results, we will contact your physician for a prescription so we can compound the medication for you.

Each individual is unique, and we firmly believe that the their medication should be as well. We compound each patient's medication specifically for them in order to best meet their individual needs. Depending your lifestyle and preference, we can deliver your dosage in a variety of different forms, including lozenges, sublingual tablets, topical creams, and suppositories.
