Our Healthy Living Expo is designed to help educate our clients on many of these products and provide tips to help avoid them. Our goal is for everyone who attends to be able to go home armed with strategies for lessening their exposure to toxic chemicals in their daily lives.

The Expo will be held on Saturday, February 27th from 2:00-3:30 PM, right here at our compounding pharmacy at the Lake of the Ozarks. The cost is only $5 per person.

5 Everyday Items That Contain Toxic Chemicals

Believe it or not, even health-conscious individuals subject their bodies to toxic chemicals every single day. It is an unfortunate fact of life that many of the products we use on a daily basis contain several harsh, toxic chemicals that can harm our bodies and our minds. In many cases, we simply do not realize the chemicals we may be exposing ourselves to. Fortunately, The Lime In The Coconut Specialty Compounding Pharmacy And Wellness Center is here to help you learn how to lessen the use of toxic chemicals in your daily life.

What Toxins Are Hiding In Your Everyday Products?

Generally speaking, the public is becoming more aware that toxic substances are hidden in the products they use every day. We hear people talk about it, but how often do we stop and think about how it may apply to the products we have in our home right now - or even the products that we used just this morning? Here are a few examples of common products that contain harmful chemicals.

1. Makeup
Believe it or not, cosmetics in the U.S. are some of the most poorly regulated ones in the world. Many of the chemicals and substances used to make American cosmetic products have actually been outlawed in several other countries due to their carcinogenic properties. Many of these chemicals are less well-known, but some of them are incredibly common (lead, mercury, arsenic are good examples).

2. Bug Spray
Does your insect repellent contain DEET? When you spray insect repellent on your skin, it is absorbed into the bloodstream. DEET has been linked to a vast array of negative health effects, including motor deficits, memory dysfunction, and lack of muscle coordination. If you must use a bug spray containing DEET, we recommend wearing long pants and sleeves and applying the spray to your clothing rather than your skin.

3. Sunscreen
Many commercial brands of sunscreen contain several harmful chemicals, such as oxybenzone, retinyl palmitate, and octinoxate. Oxybenzone can be particularly dangerous, as it tends to behave somewhat like estrogen when absorbed by the body and has been shown to alter sperm production. It has also been linked with endometriosis in women.

4. Laundry Detergent
We all want our clothes, sheets, and towels to smell clean and fresh, but unfortunately many of the laundry products we use on a daily basis contain chemicals that have been linked to everything from skin and throat irritations to cancer. Many of the chemicals are designed to stay in the clothes after they have been washed, which means they come into direct contact with the skin. They also have difficulty biodegrading and can be harmful to the environment.

5. Antiperspirants
Any antiperspirant you apply is absorbed directly into your bloodstream via the sweat glands. Many common antiperspirants are aluminum based. Aluminum has been linked to several different health issues, including bone disorders, kidney problems, breast cancer, and Alzheimer's Disease. You'll be better off using an antiperspirant that does not contain aluminum - or, better yet, using a natural deodorant and foregoing antiperspirants altogether.

Attend Our Healthy Living Expo For More Information!

Compounding FAQ

As the benefits of compounded medication become more well-known, the use of compounded medication at the Lake of the Ozarks is becoming more and more prevalent. Despite its increasing pervasiveness, however, compounded medication still seems to be shrouded in mystery. Many people come to our Lake of the Ozarks pharmacy with questions about compounding and how it may be able to benefit them. Here are some answers to a few of the questions we are most commonly asked.

How Is Compounding Different Than Normal Drug Manufacturing?
The manufacturers of standardized medication mass produce their drugs, cranking out drugs that are designed to meet the majority of patients' needs. Compounded medication is prepared in individual doses that are customized to meet the each prescription's exact specifications. Unlike standard drugs, compounding is better able to meet the unique needs of each individual patient, almost always resulting in fewer side effects and better results.

Are Compounding Pharmacies Regulated?
In a word, yes. Both compounding pharmacies and pharmacists are licensed and regulated by the State Boards of Pharmacy. Their standards and regulations are frequently updated, so compounding pharmacies are constantly required to conform to these new standards. It's a rigorous process, but we are happy to do it in order to continue to serve our valued customers.

Who Can Benefit From Compounded Medication?
Because of its completely customized structure, compounded medication has been shown to benefit a wide variety of different conditions and symptoms. Examples of some of these situations may include:
  • Arthritis
  • Chronic Pain
  • Fungal Infections
  • Head Lice
  • Migraines
  • Weight Loss
  • Oral Lesions
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Menopause
  • Diaper Rash
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Exercise & Sports Injuries
  • Andropause

The list goes on and on. To learn more about the different types of situations that can benefit from compounding medication, visit our website.

What Dosage Forms Does Compounding Medication Take?
Does compounded medication come in a pill, a liquid, or a suppository? Honestly, the answer is yes to all. Because each dose is specifically customized for each patient, we can make it any dosage form needed. Examples of some of these different dosage forms include...
  • Transdermal Gels
  • Troches (lozenges)
  • Topical Creams
  • Nasal Sprays
  • Suppositories
  • Extended Release Capsules
  • Mouth Rinses
  • Lollipops

CranioSacral Therapy For Pregnant Mothers

Incredibly gentle and non-invasive, CranioSacral Therapy has been shown to have powerful effects. Through a very light touch (generally no more than five grams of pressure), CranioSacral Therapy works to relieve tensions in the body that may impede the functioning of the central nervous system. When this achieved and homeostasis is restored in the nervous system, the body is more easily able to return to a greater sense of balance.

Over the years, our CranioSacral Therapist at the Lake of the Ozarks has been honored to assist many different individuals with many different conditions and symptoms. This week, we want to look specifically at a unique clientele base that can particularly benefit from CranioSacral Therapy: expecting mothers.

Pregnancy Is The Biggest Transformation A Woman's Body Can Undergo

It's no secret that pregnancy is a hugely transformative experience for an expecting mother. Her body will undergo numerous changes as her baby grows, finally culminating at birth. As the baby grows, she may experience additional strain in or around or her back, hips, and pelvic area. By gently releasing tension, CranioSacral Therapy may be able to help relieve these tensions and facilitate these important transitions her body is undergoing.

Pregnancy Is A Hugely Emotional Process For Most Women

We would be remiss if we did not acknowledge that pregnancy is also often an incredibly emotional experience. Surging hormones make women more susceptible to mood swings, but even apart from the stereotypical "pregnancy hormones," becoming a new mom (regardless of whether or not it is her first baby) is often a hugely emotional experience. CranioSacral Therapy aims to balance the spiritual and emotional aspect of our physical health, so therapists may be able to help ease this emotional transition.

CranioSacral Therapy May Be Able To Ease Some Of The Common Pregnancy Aches & Pains

Through its use of light touch, CranioSacral Therapy encourages healing, mobility, and expansion. CranioSacral Therapy has been able to help ease a wide variety of pregnancy-related aches, pains, and symptoms, including:
  • Back Pain
  • Rib Pain
  • Hip Pain
  • Posterior Babies
  • Headaches & Migraines
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Cesarean Recovery
  • Stress-Related Problems
  • Epidural Recovery

CranioSacral Therapy can also help to prepare the body for the physical demands that labor will require. In fact, some studies have shown that women who receive regular CranioSacral Therapy treatments throughout their pregnancies have fewer complications and shorter, easier labors.

Contact Darin To Learn More About CranioSacral Therapy And Your Pregnancy

In addition to the benefits it provides during pregnancy, CranioSacral Therapy has been shown to benefit women who are trying to conceive as well as infants and new mothers who may be recovering from a traumatic birthing experience.
